School of Sanctuary

Randlay Primary School is proud to be a City of Sanctuary (CoS) Supporting Organisation after signing the CoS pledge in September 2023:

“We support the ‘City of Sanctuary’ vision that the UK will be a welcoming place of safety for all and proud to offer sanctuary to people fleeing violence and persecution.

We endorse the City of Sanctuary Charter, and agree to act in accordance with City of Sanctuary values and apply the network principles within our work (as far as our specific context enables us to).

We recognise the contribution of people seeking sanctuary. Sanctuary seekers are welcomed, included and supported within our context. We expect our branches or local groups (if any) to support their local City of Sanctuary group if one exists, and will facilitate contact between them and their local City of Sanctuary group.”

We are now on the journey to becoming a School of Sanctuary, which we are hoping to complete by the end of the 2023-2024 academic year.

What is a School of Sanctuary?

A school that is committed to being safe and a welcoming place for all.  We help students, staff and our wider community understand what it means to be seeking sanctuary and to extend a welcome to everyone as equal valued members of the school community.

As part of our School of Sanctuary initiative, we aim to:

• Promote positive attitudes within schools and their communities around people seeking sanctuary.
• Support schools to take positive steps to be proud of being places of safety and inclusion for all.
• Recognise and celebrate schools committed to supporting people seeking sanctuary.

Why do we want to become a School of Sanctuary?

What have we been doing at Randlay towards the School of Sanctuary award?

In April 2024, we had a focused School of Sanctuary week, during which the pupils read texts focused on issues surrounding the themes of welcome, migration and sanctuary:

Miss Watton (the member of staff with overall responsibility for the award) held a whole school assembly. Each class also completed a number of lessons to develop the children's understanding of sanctuary and its importance. We also had the exciting opportunity to take part in a whole school art project, which can now be seen on our School of Sanctuary display board:

For the 2023-24 academic year, we have appointed a group of School of Sanctuary Ambassadors (two per class). Each child was nominated by their class teacher for being a fantastic role model for welcoming others to our school and for the wonderful work they completed during our School of Sanctuary week.

Here are this year's representatives:

If you would like more information about the School of Sanctuary Award, please contact Miss Watton, Mrs Stolic or Mrs Landau (Link Governor overseeing the process).
