Base 6

Welcome to Base 6

Miss Watton, Mrs White and Mrs Rodgers

We are the Year 5/6 class here at Randlay. It is our responsibility to set an example to rest of school. We pride ourselves on high standards and excellent work. However, with hard work comes extra responsibilities and rewards. We have lots of exciting things to look out for this term so watch this space!

Summer Term 2022

Our topic this term is World War Two.

This term, we will be learning about the impact of the Second World War on British society, particularly focusing on the role of women and how this changed in the twentieth century. We will also focus on evacuation, rationing and the home front.

Have a look at the link below if you want to find out more about what we will be learning this term:

"Letters from the Lighthouse" by Emma Carroll

We weren't supposed to be going to the pictures that night... not when German bombs had been falling like pennies in a jar.

February 1941

A bomb blast...

A chance encounter...

Her mother's coat.

This is all Olive can remember of the night her sister Sukie went missing. With London unsafe, Olive and her brother are evacuated to the Devonshire coast to stay with a mysterious lighthouse keeper.

There, Olive must solve a mystery of her own: a strange coded note which seems to link Sukie to Devon and to something dark and impossibly dangerous.

Weekly reminders

Your homework will consist of 10 spelling words (8 which relate to that week's rule and 2 from the Common Exception Word list). You should practise these words four times using one of the methods stuck in the back of your Homework Book. You will also have a Maths task to complete, which will be based on this term's KIRF (Key Instant Recall Facts). Completed homework must be returned to school on a Thursday, ready to be marked and returned with the following week's homework on a Friday

The Year 5 KIRF for this half term is recalling square numbers (up to 12 x 12 = 144).

The Year 6 KIRF for this half term is converting metric units of measurement (for example, knowing that there are 1000g in 1kg; understanding that 1.2km is the same as 1200m etc.)

On Mondays and Thursdays, please come to school in your PE uniform: a white polo or t-shirt, a jumper, black joggers (in winter) or shorts (in summer) and plain trainers. No football tops please.

Reading is so important for a child's development. Reading just a few minutes a day has a massive impact on a child's ability to access the rest of the curriculum. If a child reads regularly, their writing will improve, alongside other core curriculum areas.

We ask children in Year 5 and 6 to read at least five times a week and write comments in their diaries for these reads. You should use the example comments in your diary to help structure these comments. We are looking for one vocabulary, one retrieval and one inference comment per week. The other two comments are your choice. We check Reading Diaries on a Thursday, so make sure your diary is in school on this day.

Use the link below for some help with how to write your reading comments:

Spring term 2022

Our topic this term is Ancient Egypt.

This term we will consider the achievements of the earliest civilisations, including the Ancient Sumer, the Indus Valley, the Shang Dynasty of Ancient China and Ancient Egypt. We will then focus on a depth study of the Ancient Egyptians. We will understand the significant events of this period in history and order these chronologically using a timeline. To develop our understanding of this civilisation's influences, we will complete an in-depth study of the key achievements of Ancient Egyptian society.
