PSHE Curriculum Statement
Intent
At Randlay Primary School, PSHE is the thread that runs through everything we do. It reflects and enhances our school ethos as it enables our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society, as well as developing the “whole child” intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually.
Our PSHE curriculum equips children with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. Whilst developing children’s understanding of British Values – Respect, Tolerance, Rule of Law, Democracy and Individual liberty.
Within an ever-changing society, we are able to provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community. Weaving through the heart of our PSHE teaching, is a commitment to enhancing and developing our core Randlay Values; Respect, Collaboration, Creativity, Courage, Excellence and Aspiration.
Implementation
At Randlay Primary School, we follow the National Curriculum statutory guidance for the teaching of PSHE. Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education which was published in 2020. The aim of this curriculum as stated by the government was ‘In primary schools, we want the subjects to put in place the key building blocks of healthy, respectful relationships, focusing on family and friendships, in all contexts, including online. This will sit alongside the essential understanding of how to be healthy.’
The overarching aim for PSHE education which is taught in discrete lessons, is to provide pupils with:
- Accurate and relevant knowledge.
- The ability to turn that knowledge into personal understanding and to make links with their own lives and experiences of the world.
- Opportunities to explore, clarify and if necessary challenge, their own and others’ values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities.
- The skills and strategies they need in order to live healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced lives.
As such, PSHE is also taught across the school continuously during lessons, assemblies, school clubs, school events and break times. In addition, PSHE is integrated into our curriculum through our school values of Respect, Collaboration, Creativity, Courage, Excellence and Aspiration.
In EYFS:
The provision is planned to ensure development in Physical, Social and Emotional Development (PSED), which occurs daily. During provision, children will explore the ideas of relationships, feelings and appropriate behaviours, self-confidence and self-awareness, rules and routines, empathy and restorative justice. Children also receive regularly lessons which follow the ‘Jigsaw Scheme’ for early years. Work is recorded in our class floor books – ‘Jigsaw Journals’.
In KS1 and KS2:
Our whole curriculum is shaped by our school vision, ‘Working Together as One’. We are committed to providing a friendly, happy and hardworking environment where respect for others, positive attitudes towards work and behaviour are encouraged and nurtured. Where all children are valued.
We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year after year and sequenced to maximise learning for all children.
Jigsaw PSHE directs our aim on developing the “whole child” through a spiral curriculum approach to developing knowledge, skills and understanding in the areas of;
- Being Me in My World
- Celebrating Difference
- Dreams and Goals
- Healthy Me
- Relationships (taught through Respect Yourself, Eat Better, Move More RSE programme)
- Changing Me (taught through Shropshire Respect Yourself, Eat Better, Move More RSE programme)
Relationships and sex education (RSE) is taught using the age appropriate materials in the Respect Yourself, Eat Better, Move More RSE programme. This provides a comprehensive spiral curriculum on RSE from year 1 to 6, with support from health professionals as appropriate to the needs of the children. Aspects of RSE are also covered with the statutory science curriculum and physical education. Further information about his can be found in our RSE policy.
PSHE work is recorded in our class floor books – ‘Jigsaw Journals’ and assessed using end of unit assessments linked to the learning which has taken place during that unit.
British Values lessons are taught discretely as part of PSHE curriculum but also embedded throughout PSHE lessons as well as all other curriculum lessons and in assemblies.
SEND
Teachers will shape PSHE provision to ensure that all children can access this curriculum and make good progress. This may be by providing differentiated resources, pre-teaching or providing additional support as is necessary to enable all children to learn effectively.
Impact
By the time children leave Randlay Primary School they will:
- have a willingness and ability to try new things, push themselves and persevere.
- have a good understanding of how to stay safe, healthy and develop good relationships; have an appreciation of what it means to be a positive member of a diverse, multicultural society; demonstrate and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual Respect, Rule of Law and Liberty and have a strong self-awareness, interlinked with compassion of others.
Pupil voice is used to measure children’s understanding in addition to our end of unit assessment which provides information about the knowledge and skills of all learners linked to the objectives for unit they have been learning about.
Furthermore, the impact of our PSHE provision can be seen in the children’s social interactions, after-school club attendance, school councillors, play leaders, eco councillors and sports ambassadors.
