Welcome to Base 4

Welcome to our Year 6 classroom.

Year 6 is a special year, filled with opportunities to challenge ourselves, discover new interests, develop independence and create lasting memories. We encourage every child to approach their learning with curiosity, determination and a willingness to give their very best.

Throughout the year, we will celebrate our successes, support one another and demonstrate our six Randlay values: Respect, Collaboration, Aspiration, Creativity, Excellence and Courage.

Our Learning This Term

There is lots to look forward to in Year 6! Our curriculum provides opportunities for children to explore new ideas, ask questions, develop their knowledge and apply their learning in exciting ways.

English
Through a range of high-quality books, stories and poetry, we will develop our reading, writing and vocabulary skills. This term, our writing will be inspired by:

Kaspar, Prince of Cats ~ Night Mail ~ The Whale ~ Firebird

We will explore different genres, experiment with language and develop our confidence as writers.

Maths
This term, we will be developing our mathematical knowledge and problem-solving skills through:

Place value ~ The four operations ~ Fractions ~ Converting measures

We will place a strong emphasis on mathematical fluency, reasoning and explaining our thinking.

Science

We will explore the fascinating world of living things! Our learning will include classification, how organisms are grouped, adaptation, evolution and fossils. We will investigate how scientists identify and classify living things and discover how organisms have changed over time.

History

Our enquiry question is: What can the census tell us about the local area?

We will investigate historical census information to discover how our local area and the lives of the people living here have changed over time.

Geography

Our enquiry question is: Would you like to live in the desert?

We will explore desert environments, investigate their physical and human features and consider what life is like for the people who live there.

Music and Computing

In music, we will develop our musical skills by learning to play the ukulele.

In computing, we will explore music creation using Scratch and develop our creativity through stop-motion animation.

Our Class Reader

Reading is at the heart of our learning in Year 6. Sharing a class book allows us to explore new worlds, encounter interesting characters and develop our understanding of language.

Alongside our class reader, we will explore a range of fascinating non-fiction texts, including The Story of the Titanic for Children and On the Origin of Species by Sabina Radeva.

Homework

Your homework will consist of 10 spelling words. You should practise these words three times using one of the methods which are in the back of your Homework Book. You will also have a Maths task to complete, which will be based on this term’s KIRF (Key Instant Recall Facts). Completed homework must be returned to school on a Wednesday, ready to be marked and returned with the following week’s homework on a Friday.

Reading

Reading is so important for a child’s development. Reading just a few minutes a day has a massive impact on a child’s ability to access the rest of the curriculum. If a child reads regularly, their writing will improve, alongside other core curriculum areas.

We ask children in Year 6 to read at least five times a week and write comments in their diaries for these reads. You should use the example comments in your diary to help structure these comments. We are looking for one vocabulary, one retrieval and one inference comment per week. The other two comments are your choice. We check Reading Diaries on a Thursday, so make sure your diary is in school on this day.

PE

On Mondays and Thursdays, please come to school in your PE uniform: your red Randlay t-shirt, a jumper, black joggers (in winter) or shorts (in summer) and plain trainers. No football tops please.
