Intention
At Randlay Primary school we aim to foster curiosity, interest and enjoyment through the teaching of Religious Education. It is our intent to celebrate diversity through our RE units of work. We belief that through our teaching of RE British Values will be engrained in our pupils and they will enter society as respectful and accepting members of the community. Our RE offer contributes to the educational intent of our school by provoking challenging questions about purpose, beliefs, conscience and humanity.
During their time at Randlay Primary school, our children will develop an understanding of the six religions (Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam and Humanism), which will enable them to make informed judgements about their own faith and provide them with an awareness of other people’s beliefs in a society that is increasingly diverse. This will enable our children to develop moral tolerance and respect for all faiths, as well as celebrating difference. It is through the teaching of RE at Randlay Primary School, that our ‘Working as One’ ethos is truly evident; we hope that our children adopt the same attitude and hold it with them as they leave our school and enter wider society.
Implementation
To support our delivery of Religious Education, we follow the agreed syllabus from the Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education (SACRE). This syllabus of work has been designed by the local authority to support the teaching of RE from Reception through to Year Six. These documents are progressive and make connections across religions, which supports children in their ability to identify similarities across different faiths. We learn about 6 different religions as is outlined in the coverage document. The majority of units will only cover two religions at a time to avoid confusion. Units lead from an enquiry question and explore the religion’s viewpoints on the key question.
As part of understanding our wider community we maintain links with local churches and our KS2 children visit for workshops about Christmas and Easter. We will continue to explore alternative places of worship to enhance our RE offer and support the units of work that we cover.
EYFS
As with all our year groups we embed British Values and Randlay Values through our teaching of Religious Education which is taught within Personal, Social and Emotional Development and Understanding the World. The units within EYFS focus on special times within children’s experience for example welcoming a new baby. Children will find out about how children within a range of religions experience these events. The aim is for RE to be relatable to all children and to follow a playful approach that encourages exploration.
Key Stage One
Embedding British Values and Randlay Values through our teaching of Religious Education remains essential in Key stage one. In this phase children explore their key questions whilst investigating Christian beliefs and one other religions from the following: Judaism, Islam and Hinduism. Children use a range of approaches to explore their key questions including discussion, use of physical resources, creative approaches as well as some written work.
Key Stage Two
In Key stage two, as with all our year groups, we embed British Values and Randlay Values through our teaching of Religious Education. In Key Stage Two we explore the key questions whilst studying Christian beliefs and at most two other religions from the following: Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism and Humanism. We use a range of approaches in our teaching of R.E. for example, debate, creative writing and artist opportunities all of which aim to deepen children’s understanding of the questions we investigate.
How we support SEND
Staff will adapt the learning to the needs of the individuals within their classrooms ensuring that all children have the same opportunity to investigate the same questions as their peers. This may be by adapting resources or re-phrasing tasks and questions so they are accessible, for example.
