At Randlay Primary School and Nursery, we value PE as an important part of the board and balanced curriculum. We believe in giving all pupils, irrespective of their academic or physical ability, the opportunity to discover and develop their physical potential through a balanced and developmental programme of activities. We ensure that physical education is provided to our children in a safe, supportive and challenging environment in order to develop their physical and emotional health and well-being.
In this context, we are committed to achieving maximum participation for all children, whilst recognising the need for equal opportunities on the grounds of gender and children’s specific individual needs. Within a caring and supportive environment, we believe in encouraging positive relationships between groups and individuals while providing challenge and stimulation through physical activity.
Intent
At Randlay Primary School it is our intention to build a curriculum that enables children to develop knowledge, skills and vocabulary in a broad range of sporting activities, as well as developing values and transferrable life skills such as fairness and respect. We embed these through our whole school jigsaw values- Respect, Collaboration, Aspiration, Courage, Excellence and Creativity. At Randlay it is important to us that children understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle. We teach this by first ensuring that children have a love for PE and sport. We aim to increase children’s confidence in PE by teaching each skill progressively throughout children’s school experience. We track and target less active children and provide as many opportunities as we can to gain a love for sport and to increase children’s confidence with the aim of children maintaining healthy lifestyles outside of school.
We provide many opportunities for children throughout their school experience in a variety of different sports. Further up the school, we encourage our children to lead PE in a variety of ways including the opportunity to be House and Sport Captains.
Our dedication to the PE curriculum and healthy lifestyles of our children has been recognized by achievement of the Platinum School Games Mark Award, which we will hold for two academic years.

Implementation
Across the school, the PE curriculum is taught using a two-year rolling programme (cycle A and B). This ensures each year group has progressive coverage of a range of sports and activities, including swimming provision for Year 4 pupils. In KS1 and KS2 the children receive two hours of PE teaching per week taught by a Crossbar coach or Class Teacher. The only exception is when a year group has Outdoor Learning for one term of the academic year. EYFS receive one hour of PE teaching per week due to participation in ‘Little Explorers’ which is ongoing provision. The school spends the majority of its funding on Crossbar Coaching who delivers PE and supports our staff’s subject knowledge and confidence. Teachers are encouraged to regularly liaise with crossbar coaches in order to inform planning. Provision is enhanced through the use of the Sports Premium Funding and are covered by the curriculum specific skills documents.
Our PE curriculum is delivered based on the Early Years Framework (2012) and National Curriculum (2014). Both inform our subject progression documents which supports the development of children’s skills in many different sporting areas. This document also informs formative and summative assessment across each key stage.
At Randlay, we offer a range of after school clubs to engage and inspire our children’s love of sport. The provision that is offered is updated each term and we use pupil voice through our carefully selected Sports Ambassadors to ensure the clubs that are on offer are suitable to the children’s interests and needs. Throughout the year, we also enter a variety of Telford and Wrekin events to provide pupils with the opportunity to take part in competitive sport.
